On Monday, January 9, at approximately 4:40 p.m., Renton Police were dispatched to a collision involving three vehicles on the 16000 block of Maple Valley Hwy.

According to preliminary investigation, a vehicle traveling westbound crossed into the eastbound lanes of travel colliding with a second vehicle, which was then struck from the rear by a third vehicle. According to Renton Fire and Emergency Services, two patients were extricated from two of the vehicles that remained on the roadway and were transported via Medic One to Harborview. One of the drivers transported had severe trauma to his leg, while the other driver was transported with serious injuries and died several hours later.

The driver with the leg injury was identified as a 17-year-old male from Maple Valley and remains hospitalized where he is being treated for his injuries. The deceased driver was identified by King County Medical Examiner as Randall P. Britts, 50, of Maple Valley and his death ruled as accidental.

The third vehicle was found off the roadway in a ditch. The third driver was transported to Valley Medical Center by Maple Valley Fire & Life Safety, where he was treated and released. He was identified as a 27-year-old male resident from Burien.

At this time it does not appear that alcohol or drugs were contributing factors to the collision. Maple Valley Hwy. was closed for investigation of the collision until approximately 9:20 p.m. The collision is still under investigation.
