Kangley, Wash. – King County Fire District 47 was dispatched to a chimney fire on
Courtney Road shortly after 4:00 am Saturday morning. Upon arrival fire crews could
smell smoke and soon after, flames began shooting out of the roof. A second alarm
was sent out at 4:36 a.m. Maple Valley Fire and Life Safety, Enumclaw Fire and Black
Diamond Fire responded immediately to provide assistance.
The homeowner reported smelling smoke in his home and hearing crackling in his walls
early Saturday morning. Due to the power outage in the area and a downed cell phone
tower, he was forced to drive to the main road to call 9-1-. He and his wife made
it out of the home safely with no injuries.
Because there are no fire hydrants in the area firefighters had to shuttle in water
from Ravensdale, about seven miles west of the scene. Using tenders from the neighboring
fire districts, the firefighters never lost water and were able to stop the fire
from spreading, saving over half of the home.
This fire comes nearly a month to the day after the Selleck fire that destroyed
a newlyweds’ home. As we seem to be in the throws of winter weather, KCFD 47 would
like to remind homeowners to inspect their chimneys and alternative means of heat
prior to use.
KCFD # 47 is made up solely of volunteers and serves over 3,000 residents and visitors
