Veterans are being honored through an annual service project established approximately
10 years ago at Tahoma Junior High School. Half of the freshman class, armed with
buckets and scrub brushes, load onto buses and take the short ride to Tahoma National
Cemetery during their history period. Once there they begin the task of cleaning,
one by one, the headstones of American heroes from WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.
This is just one small section of the 150+ acre compound. Students are heard quietly
talking about the sacrifice servicemen, women and their families have made over
the decades. They point out various noted medals earned and learn about the significance
of each honor.
These students, while learning about history, actually become a part of history
by helping to maintain, remember, and honor our veterans. Some things just naturally
give away to pride, and Tahoma Junior High 9th grade students enhanced our community
by preparing for Veterans Day.
A special thank you to the administrative staff and faculty at Tahoma Junior High
for making this annual school-wide service project possible
