The Senior Program of Greater Maple Valley Community Center invites all adults 50+ (regardless of race, religion or culture) on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:30 – 2:30. Trips, Classes, Special Events

Payment for all trips is due at time of registration. Cancellations are refunded if seats can be filled; a $5 non-refundable service fee will be applied. Home pick-ups for trips are available. $1 each way inside MV city limits, $2 outside. Trip costs include all Community Center expenses.

As of September 6: Dial-a-Ride. We are proud to announce the Southeast Regional Shuttle (SRS), a call-response transportation program that will offer door-to-door service to all transportation dependent citizens 13 years and older living within the Greater Maple Valley, Covington, Black Diamond, Hobart, Kanaskat-Palmer, Lake Sawyer and Lake Morton areas. This will provide transportation within the service area for all personal business and connections to major public transportation lines. Cost for this service will be 50¢ one-way. This also is the new number to call if you need a volunteer driver for a medical appointment.

Wednesday, Jan. 18: Happy Birthday!! Help us celebrate all of January’s birthdays with Birthday Bingo at 11:00 and a celebratory lunch at 12:00. And if you are a January honoree, Aegis of Issaquah is picking up the tab for all of this!! Thank you, too, to Covington Place Affordable Apartments for providing the birthday cake.

Friday, Jan. 20: VA Assistance. Joel Estey ((206-612-2816) and Jeanette Moen (253-859-6439) will be here to help all Vets and their families receive any benefits earned while in service to their country. No appointments are necessary and there is no charge for this service.

Friday, Jan. 20 and Monday, Jan. 23: AARP Safe Driving. Let Rich help you brush up on your driving skills and save money on your car insurance. Class meets both days from 9:30 – 2:30; both days must be completed. Cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members payable to Rich at the 1st class. Space is limited; call 425-432-1272 to reserve your seat.

Tuesday, Feb. 7: Snoqualmie Casino. It’s been awhile, so it must be time to try our luck again. And have lunch at one of the Casino’s restaurants. Always a good time to be had! Leave GMVCC at 10:00. Cost is $9.50; take money for gaming and lunch.

Sunday, Feb. 12: Janet McKim Annual Valentine Dinner Dance. It’s that time of year again—time to celebrate the season of love with our annual dinner dance. A full chicken cordon bleu dinner will be served by the THS Honor Society and there will be dancing to the tune of “the Pardners.” All at the low cost of $5 per person, due to the generosity of the late Janet McKim. Stop by the office today to reserve your space with your payment, then use your receipt for a ticket to the dance. Space is limited.

Tuesday, Feb. 21: Greenhouse and W. W. Seymour Botanical Conservatory. First, we’ll stop by the greenhouses where the conservatory’s plants get their starts (the greenhouses also grow plants for Safeco Field, Northwest Trek, Point Defiance, et.al). Blooming in the Conservatory in February: Hyacinths, tulips, cyclamen, clivias, orchids and azaleas in many gorgeous colors make you forget that it is still winter. Leave GMVCC at 9:30. Cost is $12; take $5 donation and money for lunch.

Wednesdays: Jam Sessions. All of you musicians out there, come on in each Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 to play with a group of your peers. It doesn’t matter what instrument you play or your ability level. This is for fun! Suggested donation of $1.

Cell Phone Drop Off. Drop off your old cell phones here to be distributed to US military as well as Japanese disaster victims.

Eye Glass Drop Off. Drop off old prescription glasses here for the Lions Club to refurbish and redistribute to those who need them.

Computer Assistance. Are you having computer problems? We have a knowledgeable volunteer who wants to help you! Just call us at 425 432 1272 and we will set you up with your very own time with Richard.

Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays: Move Strong Exercise. “The Fall Stop…Move Strong” exercise program was designed specifically to improve balance and strength. It is a series of 4 different 12-minute sessions. Exercise each Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10:30. This is free and no sign-up is necessary. Please note, no exercise on party days.

Wednesdays, at 9:30 “Aging Well Yoga.” Certified Candi Foon will be on vacation this month but has chosen another certified instructor who will help you gently increase strength, flexibility, posture and balance. Everyone will be working at their own pace. 4-week class punch card is $23; 8-week class punch card is $44; 12-week class punch card is $60; drop-in rate is $6. No reservations are necessary; pay Candi in class. This class is held in the Den.

Friday: 1:00 Painting. Calling all painters (all mediums) to paint, socialize, offer and give artistic “suggestions” each Friday from 1:00-4:00. Absolutely no experience is necessary; all levels of ability are welcome. Suggested donation $1.

NEED A RIDE?

The Center Van –Monday, Wednesday, and Friday between 9:00 am and 3pm provides rides to the Center, appointments and local businesses. Van rides are $1 each way within Maple Valley city limits, $2 each way in Maple Valley/Covington area. Call 425.432.1272 for availability at least 24 hours in advance. Bus passes available.

Volunteer Transportation–
Need a ride to a medical appointment? Call Allison or Linda at 425-432-1272 to arrange a FREE ride. We now have drivers to take Covington residents to appointments. Please take note: call us with your transportation needs at least one week ahead of your appointment.

HEALTH AND FITNESS

Hearing Aid Assistance: Sonus Hearing Professionals has a representative here from 11:00-12:30 on the 2nd Wednesday of each month to assist you with any hearing aid problems you might be experiencing.

Footcare: “Karen’s Foot Care” is offered the 2nd and 4th Friday of each month. Price is $27. Please call to make an appointment. Scholarships are available for those with limited income.

Fridays: Blood Pressure Check: 1st and 3rd Fridays at 10:30

Dental Hygienist. Deb Fredrickson, dental hygienist, will be here the 2nd Wednesday of each month to offer reduced cost dental hygiene services. Come in for an information packet.

Check your driving skills with AAA’s “Roadwise Review,” a tool to help Seniors drive safely longer. Any Monday, Wednesday, or Friday Allison or Linda will be happy to go through this driving check-up with you.

Please donate your old eyeglasses!

Do you have old pairs of eyeglasses you no longer use? The Enumclaw Lions Club has an eyeglasses donation box at the Black Diamond Community Center.

Together we are collecting clean and gently used eyeglasses for people in remote areas of developing countries. The glasses will be examined and packaged by volunteer eye doctors who will sort them for the different prescription needs. This is an easy and wonderful opportunity for you to donate to a much-needed cause. The Black Diamond Community Center is located at 31605 Third Ave (SR 169) in Black Diamond. The Community Center is open Monday thru Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

BD Walk & Talk - Mondays & Wednesdays. Group meets at BDCC at 7:30 a.m. Walk around Black Diamond on Mondays, and off to the Wilderness trail on Wednesdays!

Java Chat - Immediately after Walk & Talk. Bring a friend or just come on down, Mondays at 8:30 a.m., Wednesdays at 9 a.m., to visit and enjoy coffee and sweet rolls!

TOPS - Take off Pounds Sensibly - Fridays at 9AM in the BDCC Pool Room - Lose weight and make new friends with this great support group!

Nutrition Lunch - Congregate Meal served Tuesdays and Thursdays at noon. Fresh salads served with each meal. Suggested donation is $3. Social gathering starts at 11 a.m.

Blood Pressure - Come get your blood pressure checked every Thursday from 11:30am to noon by volunteers from the Black Diamond Fire Department.

Diabetic Shoe Fittings - Are you in need of or interested in getting diabetic shoes? Appointments with Patty Hensley are available on the first Thursday of the month after lunch. Call 360-886-1011 for more information.

Free Pet Food - Once a month for low-income seniors. Sponsored by the Humane Society. Come by the Black Diamond Community Center to fill out an application. This service is available each month.

BDCC Transportation - Every Thursday for our congregate meal, pick-up times and locations vary. Please call to set up your ride! Cost is $3 for Black Diamond and $4 for Maple Valley round trip. Pre-paid cards are available.
